Hormones Connected With Aging
Hello All!!
The concept of aging has changed over the decades. 40 is now the new 30 and 60 is like turning 40. We have started understanding the aging process and this has enabled us to live an active life that is way better than our predecessors.
In women, aging is controlled by hormonal fluctuations and that can dictate ones energy, weight and mood. In spite of all the knowledge there are many women who fail to understand the basic needs of their body (food, exercise and sleep), let alone knowing about hormones.
So here is all about the 5 hormones connected with aging that work towards balancing the body’s energy, mood and weight.
1) Estrogen
This is a hormone that makes you feel like a woman (if you are one). Right from shiny hair to a smooth skin, estrogen makes a woman feel vibrant and feminine. However, as anything in excess is bad, too much of this hormone causes migraines, fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis and tender breasts. Scanty estrogen can also affect you as your bones will become weak, there will be hair fall and loss of skin’s elasticity. So, to slow down aging you need to maintain normal levels of estrogen.
Here’s what you should be eating to maintain the right levels of estrogen in the body:
Healthy fats such as nut butters, avocados and ghee.
2) Progesterone
It is a brain hormone that helps in keeping your cognitive ability sharp and your sleep sound. There are many women who are unable to focus or have a restless sleep.
You can have low progesterone if you feel exhausted by the last week of your cycle.
Here’s what you should be eating to maintain the right levels of progesterone in the body:
Foods high in magnesium such as pumpkin seeds and black beans.
3) Insulin
You can prevent unnecessary weight gain and love handles linked with aging by balancing your levels of insulin.
Here’s what you should be avoiding to maintain the right levels of insulin in the body:
- Sugars
- Refined carbs
- Too much of salt
4) Cortisol
Cortisol is a stress hormone that accelerates aging. Large swings in cortisol levels can cause chronic stress that leads to inflammation. Inflammation can in turn trigger several diseases like cancer, autoimmune diseases and diabetes.
Foods to eat to manage levels of cortisol:
You need to eat every 3 to 4 hours and add healthy fats and proteins to your meals. Say no to excess sugar and caffeine. Add 2 to 3 servings of green leafy veggies.
5) Thyroid hormones
The thyroid is a gland that takes care of your metabolism, mood, skin and hair health. Slight shift in thyroid hormones can make a lively person dull and tired.
Balance thyroid hormones with food:
You can add in selenium to your diet. Read more about selenium here – Click! You can also include iron rich food. To know more about thyroid related issues click here! Underactive thyroid as well as overactive thyroid can be troublesome.
